November 12

Here is another excerpt from the winter devotional that I will publish someday. This is the reading for November 12. It speaks to me deeply this year.

November 12

Daniel 7:9-14, Psalm 93, Revelation 1:1-8, John 18:33-37

Almighty and everlasting God,
whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son,
the King of kings and Lord of lords:
Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth,
divided and enslaved by sin,
may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and for ever. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer)

His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that shall not pass away… (Daniel 7:14)
Your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting. (Psalm 93:2)

…To him who loves us and freed us
from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom,
priests serving his God and Father,
to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
(Revelation 1:5-6)

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God,
who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
(Revelation 1:8)

The last Sunday before Advent is nearing. This will be the last Sunday of the Church year, and it focuses on Christ the King.
In the United States, the fourth Thursday in November is a celebration of Thanksgiving.
Both of these events at the end of November remind us that all our blessings
and belongings and our lives themselves are gifts
from the King who loves us.

Although these events are still days or weeks ahead, I need time to consider their significance.

As I ponder this season of endings and beginnings,
dark nights and vivid sunrises,
I worship the Alpha & Omega
who is, and who was, and who is to come.

Celebrations come and go,
abundance can abruptly turn to scarcity,
seasons of gloom can blossom into joy,
and Jesus Christ is the same
yesterday, today, and forever.
